As a superfan of Liv Constantine’s work, I was delighted to grab Promise Me Never from NetGalley during ARC reviews. Liv Constantine is the best writing duo in the modern world that will create twists and turns, gaslight the reader, absolutely fool you into thinking you know what’s going on and this new novel is no exception. Their latest thriller involves superstar Bennett Bryson, an acclaimed and celebrated horror novelist who is a widow. Savannah is a wannabe writer who sets her sights on him in order to both better herself and capture this eligible bachelor. Her scheming pays off and they’re betrothed and whisked away from NYC glittering lights to his private home. What happens next is both frightening and unbelievable. Savannah feels isolated and doesn’t really know Bennett- so now she wonders exactly who he is and is her the golden boy of the thriller world? He appears jealous and aloof- and Savannah tries to figure out what’s going on. These characters are rich, detailed, and altogether complex- and you’ll be asking yourself if you want to promise anyone anything. I would love to say I knew what was happening, but again, Liv Constantine has me gaslit and confused as the ending draws near. I literally read this on Good Friday and stayed up well past bedtime.
