I don’t usually delve this far back in historical fiction, but the court of King Henry VIII has always facinated me as an English major and reader. I’ve also not had the pleasure of reading Alison Weir before and I’m so glad I did. They Boleyn Secret is everything you want in a historical fiction thriller- secrets, twists, turns and ultimately- the truth. The story follows 12 year old Katherine, who witnesses her aunt’s beheading (that’s Anne) and believes King Henry VIII to be a horrific murderer (spoiler alert- he was). However, what Katherine doesn’t know is the history of her family and how it intersects the monarchy in more ways than one. Tudor history has never been so delicious and appealing. A lengthy read- great for a week long vacation.
